Until scientists discover a clean source of unlimited power for all, we are left with choices to make into how we heat and cool our homes and power our lives. Our goal should be to choose energy sources which create the smallest environmental impact on the planet as possible.
Every home needs heating, and a lot of homes in warmer climates also need energy-hungry appliances to create a comfortable environment during the warmer months. We also consume a lot of energy for cooking and powering our many devices.
Most of the earth’s electricity supply comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Solar power is taking up some of the burdens of satisfying our craving for energy, but even the ‘free’ power from the sun comes at a cost to the environment.
Solar panels use up natural resources during manufacture, are expensive, inefficient, and only last for about three decades.
Electricity and the Environment
Fossil fuels are mined extensively, which damages many natural habitats around the planet. Once fossil fuels are extracted and processed, they are burned to produce electricity. Greenhouse gases are a byproduct of burning fossil fuels, and tons are released into the atmosphere every month.
According to many scientists around the world, an excessive amount of these gases are causing our planet to heat up. A lot of effort is required if we are to reduce our production of harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Natural Gas and the Environment
Mining companies extract natural gas from beneath the ground by drilling straight down. When the natural gas is captured, it can be compressed down into a liquid form called LNG. You can fit a beach ball’s worth of natural gas in liquid form into space about the size of a ping pong ball.
Like fossil fuels, natural gas can be burned to create electricity, but it is also used to power gas cooking appliances, and heating furnaces directly.
When compared against electric cooking appliances and heating furnaces, natural gas is a clear winner as gas appliances cost much less to operate. The only byproducts produced by burning natural gas are carbon dioxide and water vapor, so it is a lot cleaner than burning coal or petroleum.
In conclusion, because we have no viable alternatives for completely replacing fossil fuels, our only choice is to limit our impact on the environment.
